S // SCRIPTURE

Select a verse from today’s reading

Jeremiah 21:5 (NKJV) “I Myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger and fury and great wrath.”

O // OBSERVATION

Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text

Zedekiah, King of Judah, wanted to save the city of Jerusalem from foreign invaders. He asked Jeremiah to prophesy about the battles outcome, hoping for good news from the Lord.

Instead Jeremiah prophesied bad news. He didn’t tell the king what he wanted to hear. In fact, it was probably the worst news of all. God said, “I’ll be fighting against you, on the side of your enemies.”

Zedekiah fought anyway, and failed.

A // APPLICATION

How can I apply this to my life today?

Don’t fight a battle you know you can’t win.

I remember being on the wrestling team in high school. At the time of the match we would show up at the gym and see the opposing team for the first time. We would carefully size them up and assess how tough they were.

Then I would look for my guy, the guy I was going to wrestle. Of course I hoped he was weak and out of shape. Usually that wasn’t the case.

When you’re scoping out the enemy team you never want to see God on their side. Fighting against God is never a good idea. Yet I do it every time His Word or His Spirit gives me direction and I fail to follow it. Do I really think I can succeed? Am I right and God’s wrong? Never!

Never wrestle against God.

P // PRAYER

Express yourself in prayer

Lord, The question is not whether You are on my side, but whether I am on Your side. I choose to be on Your side - always! Amen.
