Select a verse from today’s reading
Joshua 17:14-15 (NKJV) 14 Then the children of Joseph spoke to Joshua, saying, “Why have you given us only one lot and one share to inherit, since we are a great people, inasmuch as the LORD has blessed us until now?” 15 So Joshua answered them, “If you are a great people, then go up to the forest country and clear a place for yourself there in the land of the Perizzites and the giants, since the mountains of Ephraim are too confined for you.”
O // OBSERVATION
Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text
In this land distribution, the children of Joseph felt like they didn’t get their fair share. Maybe Joshua didn’t realize just how great they were. They were a pretty big deal. After all, the name Joseph means ‘Jehovah has added’. Come on, Joshua, add some territory.
I like Joshua’s response. He says, in essence, ‘OK, since you’re so great, get out there and extend your own territory. Clear the forest. Clear the giants. Make it happen’.
Actions speak louder than words.
A // APPLICATION
How can I apply this to my life today?
It’s a lot easier to talk a big game than to put effort into it. It’s a lot easier to have something handed to you than to work for it.
Joshua’s response was basically, ‘Don’t tell me how great you are. Show me.’ That’s pretty good advice for all of us.
Let your actions do the talking.
What do my actions (not my words) say about me?
P // PRAYER
Express yourself in prayer
Father, You have empowered me to do great things. Work powerfully through me that all may know Your grace and might. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit right now and work supernaturally through me to minister to someone’s need today. Amen.
