S // SCRIPTURE

Select a verse from today’s reading

John 13:8-9 (NKJV) 8 Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.” 9 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”

O // OBSERVATION

Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text

Peter tended to be a person of extremes. It’s either all or it’s nothing. No where in between. Those extremes usually got him into trouble.

A // APPLICATION

How can I apply this to my life today?

Extremes are easy. They feel right. They feel safe. “If a little of this is good then a lot of it must be better. I’ll go all in. You moderates lack zeal and commitment.”

Obedience doesn’t always find its fulfillment in extremes. Jesus said, ‘Let me wash your feet’. That was obedience. Not all of you. He had His reasons.

For true obedience I have to be sensitive to what Jesus is saying to me today. Obedience requires more attention and discernment than extremes require.

The gas pedal on my car has two extremes: no gas at all or pedal to the metal. Ninety nine percent of my driving involves somewhere in between, not in extremes. I have to watch the road signs and road conditions as they vary and respond accordingly. I would say ninety nine percent of my walk with Jesus is the same.

Beware of the draw to extremes.

P // PRAYER

Express yourself in prayer

Jesus, I want to hear Your voice and do just what You say. Nothing more and nothing less. Amen.
