who have borne witness of your love before the church. If you send them forward on their journey in a manner worthy of God, you will do well,
III John 1:6 NKJV
This verse emphasizes, as also in other places in scripture, the importance of showing hospitality to those on a journey. It was obviously a big deal in the ancient world.
Think about a world where there are no planes, buses, trains, cars or Ubers. A world where there are no hotels, motels, time shares or vrbo’s. No computers to schedule trips. There were none of the things that we use to take long trips. Now imagine having to take a long, multiple day trip. All of a sudden the kindness of strangers takes on a whole new meaning.
Unfortunately, we have almost entirely lost the art of hospitality. We have learned to travel, and to live, with a self-sufficiency that eliminates depending on anyone else.
Helping others along life’s journey is still a matter “worthy of God”.
Lord Jesus, I am not traveling my journey all alone. Thank You for those who help me along the way. Show me how I might help others. Amen.
