Are You Pondering What I’m Pondering?

Daily Reading // Luke 2:8-20

READY // SILENCIO

Take a moment to quiet your mind and prepare your heart for your time with the Lord.

READ // LECTIO

Read the passage above up to threw times aloud. Allow yourself to feel the words as they are read.

REFLECT // MEDITATIO

Now direct your focus on the words, phrases concepts or sentences that got your attention. What is God speaking to you today through His word?

Luke 2:19 (NKJV) But Mary kept all these things and pondered [them] in her heart.

Mary pondered. Do I ever ponder?

Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. In other words, she brought to get her the individual pieces of what was happening and considered them all together. That’s actually the sense of the Greek word here. To find parts of the same story and consider how they fit together and support each other. What they mean as one.

Mary had plenty to ponder. There was her visit with Zacharias and Elizabeth and their encounter with an angel. The leaping of Elizabeth’s bay in her womb and the birth of their son John. Could that be connected?

There was the angel who visited her, then spoke to Joseph in a dream. Then there was the governmental mandate of a census. Could that be connected? It required them to go to Bethlehem, where Jesus was born.

And they couldn’t find room in any house so the Baby was born in an animal shed. Could that also be an important piece of this puzzle?

They would have been very surprised at the arrival of a bunch of shepherds. They also had an amazing story about a huge number of angels.

To understand all that God was doing it required seeing these seemingly unconnected series of events as pieces of the whole. She was putting them together and giving thought to what it all means. That is pondering.

I can learn how to ponder from Mary. My life is also not a random series of disconnected events. If I am wise, I consider each one as part of a whole. What is God doing? What does it all mean? What may be yet to come?

These things are worth pondering.

RESPOND // ORATIO

Pray in response to what the Lord has spoken to you.

Father, Give me wisdom and trust to ponder Your activity in my life. YOU ARE AT WORK! I want to learn from it and not miss a thing. Amen.
