John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

John came baptizing and preaching repentance. These activities were essential for the coming of the Messiah. Yet they were pretty much without precedent. John wasn’t following any pre written playbook. He wasn’t carrying on from another’s ministry. This was new. He was right on target. Jesus Himself picked up the same activity of baptism.
John was an original. He listened to God and was fully obedient, even when it hadn’t been done that way before. It’s significantly easier to follow the paths of others than to cut your own path. It takes real guts. Do I have that kind of courage and sensitivity to God?
