S // SCRIPTURE

Select a verse from today’s reading

Mark 8:33 (NKJV) But when He had turned around and looked at His disciples, He rebuked Peter, saying, “Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.”

O // OBSERVATION

Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text

This is a very strong rebuke from Jesus to Peter. He was showing concern and compassion for Jesus. As a result Jesus referred to him as Satan. Wow!

I think the key comes from the additional explanation of Jesus: “You are not mindful of the things of God but the things of men.”

A // APPLICATION

How can I apply this to my life today?

Of course, I don’t want this same rebuke from the Lord. Could it be when I think I’m trying to protect or care for Jesus, I’m really working against him.

“You are not mindful of the things of God but the things of men.” In other words, you’re not thinking like God thinks but you’re thinking like men think. Jesus’ highest goal wasn’t protecting his own life. That’s how men think, not how God thinks.

It’s hard to think how God thinks. The way that men thinks keeps getting in the way. It takes the Spirit of God to think how God thinks. When you think how men think you may receive a rebuke from the Lord. When you think as God thinks you will certainly receive a rebuke from men. Which will I respond to?

P // PRAYER

Express yourself in prayer

God, Fill me with Your Spirit right now that I might think how You think and not as men think. Amen.
