James, a bondservant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad: Greetings.
James 1:1 NKJV
I think if I were James, I would’ve started this letter differently. I would’ve probably introduced myself this way, “James, half brother to Jesus Himself, born and raised in the very same household. The one who knows Jesus better than anyone else ever could.”
James doesn’t lean on his pedigree or natural relationship for credibility in his intro. It seems that would’ve been a natural tendency. Instead he introduces himself this way, “James, a bondservant…”
There’s nothing more important than being a bondservant, one who has committed his or her life to live in obedience to Jesus. It is the greatest source of credibility.
Am I a bondservant? Am I serving others or looking to be served? How can I serve Jesus today?
