Daily Reading // 1 Corinthians 7:1-9

READY // SILENCIO

Take a moment to quiet your mind and prepare your heart for your time with the Lord.

READ // LECTIO

Read the passage above up to three times aloud. Allow yourself to feel the words as they are read.

REFLECT // MEDITATIO

Now direct your focus on the words, phrases concepts or sentences that got your attention. What is God speaking to you today through His word?

1 Corinthians 7:6 (NKJV) But I say this as a concession, not as a commandment.

Like a good father in the faith, Paul is giving wisdom to the Corinthians about marriage. There were some very practical questions they wanted answered.

They wanted to know what was required by their new faith. In essence Paul said there are multiple things to consider, including the gift and calling of each individual. There is not a one-size-fits-all approach.

He makes another distinction in his response. He distinguishes concession from commandment. On this issue Paul gives them a concession - it’s fine to marry - rather than a commandment.

A commandment is the same for everyone. A commandment must be followed. A commandment leaves no room for negotiation.

A concession gives room. A concession makes allowances. A concession recognizes individuality.

There are a lot more concessions with our faith than commandments. Like Paul, I need to be able to identify commandment from concession. There are many people today turning concessions into commandments and commandments into concessions.

RESPOND // ORATIO

Pray in response to what the Lord has spoken to you.

Jesus, Give me wisdom in following You, especially in practical areas like marriage. I live for You, not for myself. Amen.
