Proverbs 26:2 (NKJV) Like a flitting sparrow, like a flying swallow, So a curse without cause shall not alight.
O // OBSERVATION
Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text
There are two main components to this proverb: a curse and a cause. Each have a part in this equation.
A curse is something harsh and negative spoken from one person to another. It can be curse words. It can be harmful desires. It can just be strong disagreements that result in personal attacks.
A cause is giving someone justification for cursing you. A cause is wronging someone. Or maybe you cursed them first.
Don’t worry about a curse without cause. Make sure you haven’t given them good reason to curse you.
A // APPLICATION
How can I apply this to my life today?
When I worked for a large insurance company, my trainer told me there would be times when someone would threaten to sue you. He said don’t worry about that, as long as you haven’t given them a good reason to sue. If you do everything right they can sue all they want.
That’s the idea of this proverb. I can’t control what someone else does. If they choose to curse me, that’s on them. As long as I didn’t do something to genuinely provoke them. I’m responsible for that.
It makes me think about King David and Shimei (2 Samuel 16). There’s a great example.
P // PRAYER
Express yourself in prayer
Jesus, You we’re accused, cursed and mistreated even though You didn’t deserve it. Help me to stand strong when curses come. Amen.
