S // SCRIPTURE
Select a verse from today’s reading
Deuteronomy 12:29-30 (NKJV) 29 “When the LORD your God cuts off from before you the nations which you go to dispossess, and you displace them and dwell in their land, 30 “take heed to yourself that you are not ensnared to follow them, after they are destroyed from before you, and that you do not inquire after their gods, saying, ‘How did these nations serve their gods? I also will do likewise.’”
O // OBSERVATION
Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text
Israel was warned about following the other nations in their ungodly practices. The things they were doing led to their destruction. If God’s people were led by curiosity or peer pressure to go down the same road they would meet with the same end.
It seems kind of crazy that God’s people would be warned like this and see the destructive nature of their lifestyle and still fall into the same trap. But that is just what they did.
A // APPLICATION
How can I apply this to my life today?
There is always a strong allure to what other people are doing. It’s easy to assume what they are doing must be better, or more exciting. We develop fomo (fear of missing out). What are they getting and I’m not?
By serving the Lord and following His Word I am missing out on NOTHING! There is no gain from the things of this life that lead me away from Him. Their promises for happiness and fulfillment are empty. The result is destruction. Don’t be fooled.
P // PRAYER
Express yourself in prayer
Jesus, Your love for me is expressed in Your warnings keeping me from danger. I trust You much more than the hype of this world. Amen.
