S // SCRIPTURE

Select a verse from today’s reading

Genesis 24:41 (NKJV) ‘You will be clear from this oath when you arrive among my family; for if they will not give her to you, then you will be released from my oath.’

O // OBSERVATION

Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text

Abraham sent his servant on a particularly challenging quest: to find a wife for his son, Isaac. This was an unusual job for a servant to say the least. I also wonder what Isaac thought of this plan.

He instructed the servant where to go and who to look for. He made his servant swear an oath that he would fulfill his task. It was very important to Abraham.

However, the entire oath and the servant’s responsibility for it was null and void if the woman, once found, refused to return with him. This negated the entire mission.

A // APPLICATION

How can I apply this to my life today?

There are a lot of things in life I can control. I have control over my actions, my decisions, my direction, my words, my questions, my agreements, my follow-through, my integrity, etc.

All of these the servant of Abraham could include in his covenant with his master.

He could not control the response of the other person, and neither can I.

Sometimes frustration is caused when my plans become contingent on a certain response from another person. They don’t respond the way I had planned and my response is anger or frustration.

Their response was never within my control. I have to leave people to their own decision even if it interferes with my plans.

I can make decisions for me but not for others.

P // PRAYER

Express yourself in prayer

Lord, Give me the wisdom and grace to accept the decisions of others without anxiety. Amen.
