S // SCRIPTURE

Select a verse from today’s reading

Deuteronomy 18:9 (NKJV) “When you come into the land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominations of those nations.

O // OBSERVATION

Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text

The nation of Israel had been pretty isolated, wandering through the wilderness for 40 years. They didn’t have to worry about outside influences.

Now that they were headed into the promised land they were going to find themselves surrounded by other cultures and other practices. Many of those practices were not pleasing to the Lord. God knew there would be pressure and temptation to conform to the other cultures. They hadn’t experienced that before.

A // APPLICATION

How can I apply this to my life today?

The pressures and temptations to conform to the cultures around us are very real. Just because others are doing it doesn’t mean it’s good.

I think about what all moms say to their kids when faced with peer pressure, “If all your friends jumped off a cliff, would you want to do that too?” It leaves some disturbing images in your young mind, but it makes the point.

Some of the practices followed by our culture are just as deadly as jumping off a cliff. Don’t jump off the cliff.

P // PRAYER

Express yourself in prayer

Jesus, every word from You is for my best. I trust You and I’ll follow You anywhere. Amen.
