S // SCRIPTURE

Select a verse from today’s reading

Matthew 2:22 (NKJV) But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea instead of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And being warned by God in a dream, he turned aside into the region of Galilee.

O // OBSERVATION

Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text

God spoke to Joseph through dreams. Not once, but at least three times that we know of. Once when He told Joseph to take Mary as his wife. Once when He warned Joseph about Herod. And once when God warned him about not going back to Bethlehem.

God spoke to Zacharias through an Angel. God spoke to Mary through an angel. God spoke to the shepherds through angels. God spoke to the wise men through a prophecy and a star. But God spoke to Joseph through dreams. (Like his patriarchal namesake.)

A // APPLICATION

How can I apply this to my life today?

God doesn’t speak to everyone the same way. I wonder if Joseph ever felt ripped off because he didn’t get an angelic visitation. He only got dreams. Or if he felt superior because God spoke to him multiple times - the others just once.

It does no good to compare how God speaks. The important thing is to listen attentively and to be obedient.

God speaks to me by His Word and by His Holy Spirit. I am blessed! Do I listen and obey what He says?

P // PRAYER

Express yourself in prayer

Father, Thank You for speaking to me. Like Samuel I say, “Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.” Amen.
