Drink It In

Daily Reading // Psalm 36:1-12

READY // SILENCIO

Take a moment to quiet your mind and prepare your heart for your time with the Lord.

READ // LECTIO

Read the passage above up to three times aloud. Allow yourself to feel the words as they are read.

REFLECT // MEDITATIO

Now direct your focus on the words, phrases concepts or sentences that got your attention. What is God speaking to you today through His word?

Psalms 36:7-8 (NKJV) How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings. They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house, And You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures.

You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures.

I love this sentence. I love the beautiful imagery of it. I love the excess of it. Imagine asking the Lord for a drink and He brings you a river.

When God created man, He built something in called hunger. He built something in called thirst. In hunger and thirst we experience the powerful sensation of need and desire that must be satisfied. Go without food or water for long and these become powerful drivers.

Most of us hardly know these feelings anymore. Water comes out of a tap. Food is in the fridge. When it gets low we run to the grocery store. It hasn’t always been that way.

Hunger and thirst isn’t just a trigger for us to feed ourselves. It is also a teacher. Jesus said, “Blessed are you when you hunger and thirst for righteousness.” My soul can also hunger and thirst. What do I feed it? Am I as desperate for good spiritual food as I am for groceries?

This passage tells us where we can be spiritually satisfied: under the shadow of His wings, in the fullness of His house. There is plenty in God’s pantry to keep us satisfied. We’ll never seek it out unless we hunger and thirst for righteousness.

Maybe a short fast will remind me what it feels like to be hungry. Then I can translate into spiritual hunger and thirst.

But watch out! If you ask Him for a drink He just might give you a river!

RESPOND // ORATIO

Pray in response to what the Lord has spoken to you.

Father, You have such an abundance and You are so willing to share it with me. I hunger and thirst for You today. Amen.
