Every Idle Word

Daily Reading // Psalm 12:1-8

READY // SILENCIO

Take a moment to quiet your mind and prepare your heart for your time with the Lord.

READ // LECTIO

Read the passage above up to three times aloud. Allow yourself to feel the words as they are read.

REFLECT // MEDITATIO

Now direct your focus on the words, phrases concepts or sentences that got your attention. What is God speaking to you today through His word?

Psalm 12:2 They speak idly everyone with his neighbor; With flattering lips and a double heart they speak.

Speaking idle words means speaking without really thinking about or realizing the true impact of your words. Like an idling car that can be easily hijacked and used for any purpose, idle words can also be hijacked. Only those who don’t understand the power of our words speak idly, carelessly, recklessly. It is not a trait of the godly. Jesus said we will give account for every idle word (Matt 12:36). Words are powerful. Treat them that way.

RESPOND // ORATIO

Pray in response to what the Lord has spoken to you.

Jesus, make me a thoughtful speaker. Instead of idle talk, help me make every word count for you and for your kingdom. Bring to my attention any carelessness or destructiveness in any word I speak. Make my words life-giving. Today, I will speak life, power and truth to others. Amen.
