S // SCRIPTURE

Select a verse from today’s reading

Jeremiah 26:19 (NKJV) “Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah ever put him to death? Did he not fear the LORD and seek the LORD’s favor? And the LORD relented concerning the doom which He had pronounced against them. But we are doing great evil against ourselves.”

O // OBSERVATION

Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text

There was an influential group in Jerusalem who wanted to put Jeremiah to death because his message was unpopular. It was from the Lord, but unpopular. His message was for them to repent and stop doing evil. Instead they were going to add to the evil.

One righteous person spoke up for Jeremiah. He recognized the evil that was being planned was not just against Jeremiah, not just against God, ‘but we are doing great evil against ourselves’.

A // APPLICATION

How can I apply this to my life today?

You can’t lie, cheat, plot, or go against God’s Word and not suffer as a result. When I do evil, I am the offender and the victim. I am the defendant and the plaintiff.

I can’t gain from doing evil. It may seem like it, due to short term advantages. But I do myself extensive harm. I am my own worst enemy when I fail to listen to God and live for Him.

P // PRAYER

Express yourself in prayer

Father, You always have my best interest in mind. I don’t. I trust You with my life more than I trust me. Reveal evil in me and lead me in the way everlasting. Amen.
