Eye On The Prize

Daily Reading // 1 Corinthians 9:19-27

READY // SILENCIO

Take a moment to quiet your mind and prepare your heart for your time with the Lord.

READ // LECTIO

Read the passage above up to three times aloud. Allow yourself to feel the words as they are read.

REFLECT // MEDITATIO

Now direct your focus on the words, phrases concepts or sentences that got your attention. What is God speaking to you today through His word?

1 Corinthians 9:24-25 (NKJV) 24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain [it.] 25 And everyone who competes [for the prize] is temperate in all things. Now they [do it] to obtain a perishable crown, but we [for] an imperishable [crown.]

I am thinking this morning about the prize.

Paul compares the life of a disciple to running a race. He was talking to the Corinthians, who hosted an Olympics-like competition every other year. They knew for any major race there has to be a prize, a crown.

The prize needs to be settled before the race begins. Who would compete in a race where they were told, “After you race, then we’ll figure out what you’ve won.” No, prizes, trophies, crowns are determined, designed and crafted before the race ever begins.

Jesus has already secured the prize. He secured it before the foundation of the world (Rev. 13:8). The victor’s crown is ready.

The prize also needs to be desired or sought-after.

I was attended a gymnastics class yesterday with my two-year old grandson. On a high ledge in the gym say a number of trophies the gym had won over the years. When my grandson saw them, he immediately wanted a trophy. He’s only two but he could tell a trophy was desirable.

Paul tells us the prize we’re racing for is greater than any other prize imaginable (1 Cor. 2:9). Jesus says it comes with a mansion.

This is one race worth working for.

RESPOND // ORATIO

Pray in response to what the Lord has spoken to you.

Jesus, I need Your help to compete well in this race. It’s a tough race at times, but nothing compared to the race You ran. I receive Your help today and keep my eye on the prize. Amen.
