S // SCRIPTURE

Select a verse from today’s reading

Isaiah 19:2 (NKJV) “I will set Egyptians against Egyptians; Everyone will fight against his brother, And everyone against his neighbor, City against city, kingdom against kingdom.”

O // OBSERVATION

Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text

There are a few of times in the Bible when God destroyed the enemies of Israel by setting themselves against one another. They destroyed one another so that the armies of Israel didn’t even have to fight. They just strolled into the scene of devastation and gathered the plunder.

Once was when many nations came against Jehosophat. It was an absolutely hopeless situation. God said, “I got this”. He caused them to fight one another and they were done.

Another one was when Samaria was under seize in another hopeless battle. Everyone was dying inside the city walls and the enemy had all the advantage. God caused them to hear things, fight an invisible enemy and flee.

Now that same idea is mentioned here by Isaiah. It is the ultimate foolishness and the most insane way to lose a battle, by fighting one another.

A // APPLICATION

How can I apply this to my life today?

As crazy as it sounds for one army, one people-group to fight one another instead of their common enemy, we’re doing it today.

“Everyone will fight against his brother, and everyone against his neighbor, city against city, kingdom against kingdom.”

What foolishness! What self-destructive behavior! In the military they call it ‘friendly fire’, but there’s nothing friendly about it.

I will not take part in this insane behavior.

P // PRAYER

Express yourself in prayer

Father, You say, “Love your enemies” yet we can’t even love ourselves. Heal our land. Amen.
