S // SCRIPTURE
Select a verse from today’s reading
Psalms 14:1 (NKJV) To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, They have done abominable works, There is none who does good.
O // OBSERVATION
Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text
As I read these verses I wonder a bit about their cause and effect relationship.
Does someone say in his heart, “There is no God” because he is a fool? Or is he a fool because he says in his heart, “There is no God”?
And where do corrupt and abominable works come in? Are they the result of someone being a fool, the result of someone denying God, or the cause of those things?
Certainly they all go hand in hand. The presence of one invites the presence of the others.
A // APPLICATION
How can I apply this to my life today?
Without God how can anyone escape foolishness and evil behavior? Begin with the wrong premise and how can you hope to think and act soundly? That’s why it is so important to have strong fundamentals in life.
Fundamentals are found in God’s Word and in prayer.
I remember a high school scavenger hunt. Bus loads of students were given the same clue. The clue led to a busy destination. At the destination you were to ask people for the next clue. Those not part of the game thought you were crazy. The one with the clue gave it to you for your next location, and so on.
I even remember the first clue we had to solve:
“There is a right way and a wrong way; A dangerous way and a (blank).”
We figured right and wrong had to do with the courthouse. So we stopped the bus at the courthouse and began asking everyone around for the next clue. They all thought we were crazy. No one had the next clue. We were stuck.
Of course, the right answer was “Safeway”. All the other buses figured it out and were off on their second clue.
When you have the wrong answer, it doesn’t matter how persistent you are. You’re not going to figure things out. You’re going to find yourself looking like a fool instead.
The wrong answer is: There is no God. With that starting point we literally have no hope.
P // PRAYER
Express yourself in prayer
God, There IS a God! You have revealed Yourself to me and saved me from foolishness, corrupt behavior and abominable works. I can now do good because of You. Hallelujah!
