And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope.
Romans 5:3-4 NKJV
To glory in tribulation is very remarkable. It seems that the major goal of life is to avoid tribulation. That is why we focus so much on acquiring wealth and comfort and security. It is to avoid tribulation including pain and discomfort and fear. What could possibly motivate someone to be willing to embrace and welcome tribulation? Could it be character? Why?
The answer to this question can only be found in eternity. That’s where the ‘hope’ of verse 4 comes in. Comfort and wealth of this life must be of lessor importance than eternal character. That is where the battle wages.
Father, Give me today a glimpse of eternity. Help me put eternal character above immediate comfort. Amen.
