S // SCRIPTURE

Select a verse from today’s reading

Proverbs 25:27 (NKJV) It is not good to eat much honey; So to seek one’s own glory is not glory.

O // OBSERVATION

Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text

Honey was the junk food of Solomon’s day. It is not good to eat much honey. There’s nothing wrong with honey. It is delicious and natural. The problem is eating too much of it.

The difference between eating honey and eating much honey is often self-control. Once you’ve tasted it, it can be tough to stop. Stopping before you’ve had too much takes discipline and will power.

This proverb isn’t about honey. It’s about seeking your own glory. Tooting your own horn, as we say. Making yourself look good is as tempting as eating too much honey. When tempted, I am wise to use self-control.

A // APPLICATION

How can I apply this to my life today?

There was a Lays potato chip ad on tv years ago. The catch phrase was ‘No one can eat just one’. Once you get started it’s hard to stop. Maybe this proverb in our day would use potato chips instead of honey.

Seeking my own glory can be like that. It’s tempting, enticing, and seems okay at the time. But once you start it’s hard to stop. It takes self-control.

Here’s a great remedy for seeking my own glory: It is seeking the glory of others. Point out the good others do. Remark to them and to others about their good qualities.

I like to say it this way: It’s okay to brag, just don’t brag about yourself. Brag about others. Not as flattery of course but as genuine words of affirmation. This world would be a better place if people bragged about others more.

Who can I brag about today?

P // PRAYER

Express yourself in prayer

Lord, Help me today to see the good in those around me and then to point it out. Amen.
