REFLECT // MEDITATIO
Now direct your focus on the words, phrases concepts or sentences that got your attention. What is God speaking to you today through His word?
Psalms 43:1 (NKJV) Vindicate me, O God, And plead my cause against an ungodly nation; Oh, deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man!
This verse, and this whole passage, is perfect for the times in which we are living.
That first word, translated here as ‘vindicate’ me, is key.
The fundamental meaning is ‘judge’, or ‘to be a judge over’. A righteous judge declares an innocent man innocent - vindicating him. That’s the sense of ‘vindicate me, O God’.
But there’s a deeper and broader sense of what David is saying.
By saying, ‘be judge over me’ he is also saying something else. Throughout the history of Israel, right up to David’s time, the one who governed the land were the judges. David is also saying ‘Govern me, O God’.
How about having God as your government? That’s a huge improvement, isn’t it?
Isaiah says, “For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder.” Isaiah 9:6 (NKJV)
I cry out today with King David, “Govern me, O God!” When I become frustrated by governmental decisions, partisan politics, election nonsense, corrupt and manipulative policies, it is a comfort to know God is my government. He is righteous and seeks my good, not his own interests.
As David expressed, there are deceitful and unjust men and women all around us. They wrestle for power, authority and control. But You, Lord, are my Governor. You are my government. I keep my eyes on You and will follow You.
RESPOND // ORATIO
Pray in response to what the Lord has spoken to you.
Govern me, O Lord. Plead my cause. Deliver me from deceitful and unjust leaders. They don’t govern me. You do. Amen.
