REFLECT // MEDITATIO
Now direct your focus on the words, phrases concepts or sentences that got your attention. What is God speaking to you today through His word?
1 Corinthians 2:7 (NKJV) But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory,
There is a phrase in this verse that is eye-catching and attention-getting. The phrase is ‘hidden wisdom’.
I like phrases like this. They make you think. ‘Hidden wisdom’. There is a wisdom that is hidden. Hidden to whom? For what purpose? For how long?
Hidden to whom? The rest of the context makes this pretty clear. There is a difference between natural wisdom and spiritual wisdom. Natural wisdom can only take you so far. You can figure things out up to a point. But then, natural wisdom runs out. It fails.
This hidden wisdom is hidden to those who only have access to natural wisdom. There is no ability to gain spiritual wisdom through natural means. Looking at the moon with the natural eye may give you some general sense of the craters on its surface. Looking at the moon with a high-powered telescope gives you more information with great detail.
For what purpose? It is not God’s desire to hide wisdom from anyone. Wisdom is not hidden because of His reluctance to make it known. It is hidden because of the reluctance of some to seek and accept it.
When someone is not open to a spiritual answer to a particular problem and they look only to the natural, the spiritual wisdom that is needed remains a mystery. It’s like they say, “When all you have is a hammer everything looks like a nail.”
For how long? There will come a time when the natural world will fully give way to the supernatural world. This world is running down, like a grandfather clock whose tension weights are nearing the bottom. When it does everything will change. And, as it is written in 1 Corinthians 13, “Then I will know fully, even as I am fully known.”
RESPOND // ORATIO
Pray in response to what the Lord has spoken to you.
Jesus, You have made spiritual wisdom, which is spiritually discerned, available to me. Teach me to draw on Your wisdom. Give me discernment for the decisions I have to make today. Amen.
