Proverbs 22:13 (NKJV) The lazy man says, “There is a lion outside! I shall be slain in the streets!”
O // OBSERVATION
Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text
There are a couple of things going on in this proverb that are worth noting. One is the paralyzing nature of fear - letting fear of what might happen keep you from normal, everyday activities. We can go to a worse case scenario and live in constant dread.
The other is our tendency to make excuses rather than just getting things done. A lazy person doesn’t want to be seen as lazy, so excuses are made to cover his or her laziness. An excuse is a sort of smoke screen to give cover for the real issue.
A // APPLICATION
How can I apply this to my life today?
I won’t let fear keep me from God’s calling on my life. Scripture says there is a spiritual lion prowling the streets (1 Peter 5:8). The more I press forward in things of the Lord the more I may face opposition and attack. THAT WON’T STOP ME. I won’t be afraid of that old lion.
And I won’t make spiritual excuses. Many have excuse after excuse why they don’t pursue more diligently, more faithfully, relationship with God. As a good friend of mine says, “You’re as close to God as you want to be.”
I will not fall prey to spiritual fear or spiritual excuses.
Now, where is that lion?
P // PRAYER
Express yourself in prayer
Father, You have not given me a spirit of fear but of power, and love, and a sound mind.
