Just Below the Surface

SCRIPTURE:

which things are symbolic. For these are the two covenants: the one from Mount Sinai which gives birth to bondage, which is Hagar— for this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children— but the Jerusalem above is free, which is the mother of us all.

OBSERVATION:

This chapter affirms strongly the symbolic nature of scripture. Of course, it is true elsewhere also. Here the symbolic nature of scripture screams to us. Paul opens a huge door of understanding by interpreting the actual events of the Old Testament as meaningful symbolically. The story of Abraham, Sarah and Hagar actually happened, but they happened to teach us something.

APPLICATION:

I can read scripture for its literal truth. I need the Spirit of God to show me what that truth is teaching me symbolically. How much truth must be lying just below the surface?

PRAYER:

Spirit of God, teach me. Amen.
