S // SCRIPTURE

Select a verse from today’s reading

Ecclesiastes 5:4-5 (NKJV) 4 When you make a vow to God, do not delay to pay it; For He has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you have vowed-- 5 Better not to vow than to vow and not pay.

O // OBSERVATION

Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text

Much is said in this chapter about making a vow - or promise - and not paying it. Why do people do that?

It might be intentional. The person never intended to keep their vow. They were just stringing someone along to get what they want but they don’t reciprocate.

It might be unintentional. They meant to keep their promise but when it came down to it the cost was more than expected.

Intended or unintended the instruction is the same. Keep your vow.

A // APPLICATION

How can I apply this to my life today?

Two main applications: Don’t be rash in giving out promises. Don’t fail to keep your promises, even if is is sacrificial.

There is a greater spiritual cost to not keeping your promises than whatever you need to pay.

P // PRAYER

Express yourself in prayer

Lord, thank You for always keeping Your promises to me. Show me where I have failed to keep my promises. Amen.
