S // SCRIPTURE

Select a verse from today’s reading

Jeremiah 50:1-3 (NKJV) 1 The word that the LORD spoke against Babylon and against the land of the Chaldeans by Jeremiah the prophet. 2 “Declare among the nations, Proclaim, and set up a standard; Proclaim--do not conceal it-- Say, ‘Babylon is taken, Bel is shamed. Merodach is broken in pieces; Her idols are humiliated, Her images are broken in pieces.’ 3 For out of the north a nation comes up against her, Which shall make her land desolate, And no one shall dwell therein. They shall move, they shall depart, Both man and beast.

O // OBSERVATION

Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text

The Assyrians defeated the Northern Kingdom of Israel. They absorbed Israel into their kingdom. The Assyrians were the biggest and baddest around. They also came against the southern kingdom but weren’t able to get a full victory.

Then came Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonians. They were bigger and badder than the Assyrians. Babylon absorbed all of Assyria, including the Northern Tribes, into their Kingdom. In Jeremiah’s day, they were also able to defeat the Southern Kingdom of Judah. They were unbeatable.

Jeremiah prophesied about an even bigger and badder kingdom that would come and swallow up Babylon. It may have seemed impossible at the time, but that’s exactly what The Medes and Persians did under Cyrus the great.

After them came Alexander the Great and the Greeks … then came the Romans … On and on it goes.

A // APPLICATION

How can I apply this to my life today?

One kingdom gives way to another kingdom. Just like the saying, “There’s always a bigger fish in the sea”.

Earthly kingdoms will come and go. The Kingdom of God is forever!

Even the most seemingly invincible world system or power eventually gives way to another. Don’t be discouraged by power grabs or put your hope in them. All will ultimately fail.

We have a lasting Kingdom in the heavens. We have been given something permanent. Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.” (Luke 21:33 NKJV)

That’s the one thing I can count on.

P // PRAYER

Express yourself in prayer

Jesus, You tell me that the powers and rulers of this world will have their day but it is short. My confidence is not in them but in You. Amen.
