S // SCRIPTURE
Select a verse from today’s reading
Psalms 109:2 (NKJV) For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful Have opened against me; They have spoken against me with a lying tongue.
O // OBSERVATION
Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text
David, who wrote this psalm, knew what it was like to have lies told about him. All he could do in defense was to call out to the Lord. That’s not a bad defense.
Of course David famously lied about the Bathsheba incident. God called him on his lies.
A // APPLICATION
How can I apply this to my life today?
Sometimes it seems as though lying is a modern invention, like cars and washing machines. Lying has been around for a long, long time.
Jesus said Satan himself is the father of lies and lying is his native language (John 8). The first recorded lie was Satan in the Garden in the earliest days of creation.
When I twist or bend or forsake the truth I am not speaking for God but speaking for the enemy. An attempt to deceive for my own gain makes me less like God and more like the devil. I won’t do it.
As we all known from childhood wisdom:
Liar, Liar, pants on fire
Hanging by a telephone wire
P // PRAYER
Express yourself in prayer
Father, Give me courage to only speak the truth and never lies. Amen.
