Life’s Battles

Daily Reading // Psalm 27:1-14

READY // SILENCIO

Take a moment to quiet your mind and prepare your heart for your time with the Lord.

READ // LECTIO

Read the passage above up to three times aloud. Allow yourself to feel the words as they are read.

REFLECT // MEDITATIO

Now direct your focus on the words, phrases concepts or sentences that got your attention. What is God speaking to you today through His word?

Psalms 27:14 (NKJV) Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD!

What a beautiful psalm! I read it over and over today and let its beautiful words wash over me.

We talk about fighting battles in our lives: battles against illness or emotional battles. We talk about being at war against sin or other political or ideological war. The ‘battle of the sexes’ or ‘the war on drugs’.

For most of us the idea of a battle or war is used metaphorically. We haven’t been in a real war.

David knew what it was like to be at war in a battle for your life. This was no metaphor. It was the real thing. He learned the only place for hope and refuge in those times was in the Lord.

In this psalm are the words: enemies, foes, war, adversaries and violence. Quite literally. And yet this is a psalm of beauty and hope.

I don’t think our struggles are any less significant or difficult than David’s just because his are literal and ours are figurative. Every one of us has our own brand of trouble and our need to look to the Lord for beauty and hope. The message of this psalm is clear. Whatever you’re dealing with, ‘Wait on the Lord and be of good courage’.

RESPOND // ORATIO

Pray in response to what the Lord has spoken to you.

Jesus, You are sufficient for any and every difficulty I will ever face. Amen.
