In the days of Jeremiah idols were fashioned out of wood or out of stones. They were carved into the likeness of a person or an animal an then worshipped. Jeremiah pointed out the foolishness of idol worship.
This verse reminds me of our culture today. Not because we make idols from the earth but because many make idols of the earth. Environmentalism can rise to the level of idolatry. Every rock, every tree has become sacred and is worshipped by some. Our fate is in the hands of Mother Earth.
The earth is an amazing creation but it is not creator.
Father, You alone are God. You have made everything, the earth and all it contains. I worship You. Amen.
