S // SCRIPTURE

Select a verse from today’s reading

2 Chronicles 27:1-2 (NKJV) 1 Jotham was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jerushah the daughter of Zadok. 2 And he did what was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father Uzziah had done (although he did not enter the temple of the LORD). But still the people acted corruptly.

O // OBSERVATION

Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text

King Uzziah was a great King for a long time but he didn’t finish well. His son Jotham followed in his footsteps. He did all the right things but the people he governed didn’t respond.

The king did what was right in the sight of the Lord but the people did not.

A // APPLICATION

How can I apply this to my life today?

There are no guarantees in leadership. There is no fool-proof formula. A leader - a king, a teacher, a parent, a coach, etc - can do all the right things but still those they are trying to lead may make wrong decisions. It is called ‘free will’.

Do we say, “Well, I’m not going to lead well and do what is right then”? That is conditional obedience. Lead well and do what is right no matter what.

P // PRAYER

Express yourself in prayer

Jesus, You show us how to be a perfect leader with imperfect followers. Amen.
