Select a verse from today’s reading

Job 9:2 (NKJV) “Truly I know it is so, But how can a man be righteous before God?”

O // OBSERVATION

Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text

In these chapters Job is wrestling with some pretty weighty issues about him and God. Because of his difficult situation he is being incredibly honest about what he thinks and feels.

He is, quite possibly, wrestling with these issues in a way that he had never done before. He had lived a good, prosperous, blessed life. He obviously lived a godly life. Yet these deep faith-questions and God-questions are new to him in this way.

One of these questions involves righteousness. If his friends are right (but they’re not), then this mistreatment is because he is not righteous before God. How then can a man be righteous before God, since that was his aim and intention his whole life?

And should that righteousness of his earn him a carefree life?

When he contemplated God more fully he realized there is no way his righteousness in comparison could obligate God on his behalf. It couldn’t. How then can a man be righteous before God?

A // APPLICATION

How can I apply this to my life today?

Job was right. On his own, no man or woman could hope to use their own righteousness to obligate God. It just doesn’t make sense.

The wisdom found in Job is part of our discovering our need for a Savior. Much of the Old Testament is God showing us our need for a Savior and the prophetic information about His coming.

Back to the question: How can a man be righteous before God?

There is only ONE way. That is for God to make him righteous. It is not within man on his own to have righteousness before the Creator of the universe. It takes God to make that happen.

And He did. With Jesus’ sacrifice I can be righteous before God. Without Him, there’s no way. That is part of what we learn from the struggles of Job.

P // PRAYER

Express yourself in prayer

Jesus, You give me what I could never give myself - righteousness. I praise You for Your great gift. Hallelujah!
