Peace?? On This Earth??

Daily Reading // Luke 2:8-20

READY // SILENCIO

Take a moment to quiet your mind and prepare your heart for your time with the Lord.

READ // LECTIO

Read the passage above up to threw times aloud. Allow yourself to feel the words as they are read.

REFLECT // MEDITATIO

Now direct your focus on the words, phrases concepts or sentences that got your attention. What is God speaking to you today through His word?

Luke 2:14 (NKJV) “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

What a declaration from the angels! “On earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

And yet the earth has never known peace. There are wars, conflicts, divisions and inhumanity from that time till now.

But look closer. Haven’t there always been people who have experienced peace, even in difficult times?

I think we often misread this to mean global peace. Political peace. Military peace. Isn’t that the same mistake the disciples made? Thinking that Jesus would be an earthly king who would free them from the Romans.

This peace is different. It’s more significant than global peace. It is personal peace. Spiritual peace. Because Jesus came there is a peace available to me, and to everyone, that wouldn’t be available otherwise. It is a peace not dependent on circumstances around me.

Jesus confirmed this later when He told His disciples His peace was different:

John 14:27 (NKJV) “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Peace on earth doesn’t mean the whole earth will have peace. It’s better and more significant than that. It means personal peace is available to all who choose it.

Let not your heart be troubled.

RESPOND // ORATIO

Pray in response to what the Lord has spoken to you.

Jesus, I receive Your peace today. Even in this troubled earth You brought me peace! Amen.
