Political Innocence

Daily Reading // Matthew 2:1-6

READY // SILENCIO

Take a moment to quiet your mind and prepare your heart for your time with the Lord.

READ // LECTIO

Read the passage above up to threw times aloud. Allow yourself to feel the words as they are read.

REFLECT // MEDITATIO

Now direct your focus on the words, phrases concepts or sentences that got your attention. What is God speaking to you today through His word?

Matthew 2:1-2 (NKJV) 1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.”

The wise men from the East showed up after Jesus had been born, but before Herod and others were aware of it.

When they showed up they asked a very sincere and innocent question: “Where is the newborn king?” From what they could tell it was an appropriate question. After all, since they, being from a great distance away, knew about the new king then everyone in the neighborhood must know about it.

But they did not.

Have you ever asked someone a question and then realized that by asking the question you may have let something slip that you weren’t supposed to? That may be what happened here.

I’m a little surprised by the political innocence of the wisemen. They asked the current king about the new king. That would be his political rival. Didn’t they know the political chaos that would cause?

I’m a bit politically innocent myself. Who has time to worry about politics and political sensitivity when you are looking for Jesus? Doesn’t that search outweigh any political strategy?

When you’re a wiseman it does.

RESPOND // ORATIO

Pray in response to what the Lord has spoken to you.

Jesus, I know there is political chaos all around me. I can’t keep the current conspiracies straight. I choose to seek You instead. Amen.
