Possessed By Possessions

Daily Reading // 2 Corinthians 6:4-10

READY // SILENCIO

Take a moment to quiet your mind and prepare your heart for your time with the Lord.

READ // LECTIO

Read the passage above up to three times aloud. Allow yourself to feel the words as they are read.

REFLECT // MEDITATIO

Now direct your focus on the words, phrases concepts or sentences that got your attention. What is God speaking to you today through His word?

2 Corinthians 6:10 (NKJV) as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and [yet] possessing all things.

I love this list of contrasts that Paul provides in these verses. We are certainly people of contrast. The reason? Because we live daily in one reality while our true reality lies in wait.

This list is so real. It doesn’t sugar-coat anything. I read once where Shakleford, on his famous pole exploration, posted an add listing all the hardships they would face on the journey. He was overwhelmed with applicants. I think we all know intuitively that anything worthwhile is not going to be easy.

One of these contrasts from present reality to eternal reality is “as having nothing yet possessing all things”. Interesting.

There are a lot of things to possess that have no real benefit. These are the things that everyone pursues: riches, property, fame, etc. In the scope of eternity, are the least meaningful things to possess.

Not only are these the least meaningful, they also come with the greatest danger. These things in this life that are so sought-after can be called possessions for a more sinister reason: Because they can possess you. When something controls you, occupies your thoughts and decisions, and becomes an obsession then it possesses you.

Many people are possessed by possessions.

Paul says we have nothing and yet possess all things. What I possess isn’t stored in a bank or registered with a deed. It is stored up as treasures in heaven. It won’t depreciate, doesn’t need to be polished or maintained.

I need to remind myself again today: Don’t be possessed by possessions.

RESPOND // ORATIO

Pray in response to what the Lord has spoken to you.

Father, Your riches and blessings to me are more than enough. Some of those are mine to enjoy today - relationships, health, peace, joy. Others are stored away for me in eternity. You are so generous to me. Amen!
