Pray, Think, Act

Daily Reading // Isaiah 28:16-29

READY // SILENCIO

Take a moment to quiet your mind and prepare your heart for your time with the Lord.

READ // LECTIO

Read the passage above up to three times aloud. Allow yourself to feel the words as they are read.

REFLECT // MEDITATIO

Now direct your focus on the words, phrases concepts or sentences that got your attention. What is God speaking to you today through His word?

Isaiah 28:16 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: "Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation, A tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; Whoever believes will not act hastily.

The thing that really got my attention in this verse are the final words ‘will not act hastily’. What does it mean to act hastily? This verse says someone who trusts in the cornerstone (Jesus) will not act with haste. I normally think of haste as simply being fast or quick. But the sense here is more than that. It speaks more of urgency and even panic. It means to act in such a panicked state that you don’t really stop and think about - or pray about - your action or its outcome. We have a saying, “Haste makes waste“. That’s a bit more of what this is getting at. Why would I act in haste? Usually it’s anxiety or fear. By trusting in Jesus, there’s no need to fear. No action needs to be done without thinking or praying. Never let anxiety or fear drive your actions or decisions. Trust in Jesus, the tried and true, sure foundation. When tempted with a hasty act, plant your feet on the solid ground and do not fear. Pray, think and act.

RESPOND // ORATIO

Pray in response to what the Lord has spoken to you.

Jesus, I trust You over my hasty impulses. Amen.
