Proverbs 1:3 (NKJV) To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, judgment, and equity;

O // OBSERVATION

Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text

Proverbs and the instruction of scripture have a purpose. The purpose is not just to make people who know more stuff. If going to church and reading our bibles only makes us know more stuff but doesn’t have practical application, doesn’t change the way I think and live, then it is an epic failure.

This verse is a purpose statement for the book of Proverbs. It gives four practical outcomes desired by this book: wisdom, justice, judgment and equity.

A // APPLICATION

How can I apply this to my life today?

Wisdom. Wisdom is the ability to see truth, even when it is hidden by clutter. It is also the ability to apply truth to given situations. Wisdom allows you to think ahead about consequences and outcomes before they happen. Wisdom allows you to anticipate and make decisions now, not just for the immediate good but also for the long-term best.

Justice. Justice to do what is just, or what is right. It usually involves issues where more than one person is concerned. God is very concerned with how I treat other people. That’s why He says so much about it in His Word.

Judgment. Judgment involves decision making. It is judging between multiple options or ideas. A person with good judgment makes good decisions. This person knows how to weigh the pertinent information and come to a good conclusion.

Equity. Equity means treating everyone fairly. It means everyone must be seen through the same lens. Equity requires a forceful and intentional overcoming of natural biases. Everyone has a natural bent to favor some and look down on others. This natural tendency threatens equity.

Proverbs are to be used, not just studied.

P // PRAYER
