Reshuffling The Deck

Daily Reading // Luke 1:26-35

READY // SILENCIO

Take a moment to quiet your mind and prepare your heart for your time with the Lord.

READ // LECTIO

Read the passage above up to threw times aloud. Allow yourself to feel the words as they are read.

REFLECT // MEDITATIO

Now direct your focus on the words, phrases concepts or sentences that got your attention. What is God speaking to you today through His word?

Luke 1:26-27 (NKJV) 26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name [was] Mary.

Joseph and Mary weren’t where they were supposed to be. As it turns out, they were exactly where they were supposed to be.

Question: Why did Mary and Joseph have to travel a long way to Bethlehem? Everyone knows that - because they had to go to the home of their family line and they were from the house of David. Duh!

Yes, but why were they not already living there? If they were from the tribe of Judah, why weren’t they living in Judaea? Why were they living in Galilee, where the tribe of Naphtali live?

Life happens. That’s why.

Between the time of establishing the territory of the twelve tribes of Israel and this census a lot of life happened. The northern kingdom was taken into exile by the Assyrians. Then the southern kingdom was taken away by the Babylonians. Then other people were allowed to settle there, like the Samaritans. And then everyone was allowed to go back by the Persians.

The deck was reshuffled.

We have all felt the reshuffling from time to time. It may feel like we end up where we’re not supposed to be. In fact, Mary and Joseph were just where they were supposed to be.

Even when I go through some of the greatest reshuffling possible I still end up tight where God wants me to be.

Right now I am right where God wants me to be.

RESPOND // ORATIO

Pray in response to what the Lord has spoken to you.

Father, When life feels like a great shuffle my confidence is in You. Amen.
