Secret Motives

Daily Reading // Matthew 2:1-6

READY // SILENCIO

Take a moment to quiet your mind and prepare your heart for your time with the Lord.

READ // LECTIO

Read the passage above up to threw times aloud. Allow yourself to feel the words as they are read.

REFLECT // MEDITATIO

Now direct your focus on the words, phrases concepts or sentences that got your attention. What is God speaking to you today through His word?

Matthew 2:7 (NKJV) Then Herod, when he had secretly called the wise men, determined from them what time the star appeared.

It says here that Herod secretly called the wise men. The sense there is not that he called the wise men without others knowing about it. That’s not the meaning of ‘secretly’ here.

It means that when he called for them he kept his real motive secret from them. He knew they would not agree to his evil and self-centered plan. So he presented himself to them as a fellow worshipper, not as a scheming king.

Many come to the Lord with false motives. They present themselves as worshippers but are secretly after their own benefit.

The wise men came to give great gifts to the King. Herod was threatened and wanted His destruction. The wise men were successful in their purpose. Herod was not.

Don’t be one who comes to Jesus with secret motives. Be careful of those who do.

RESPOND // ORATIO

Pray in response to what the Lord has spoken to you.

Jesus, I am selfish at heart, like Herod. Rid me of any secret motive in following You. Amen.

Beautiful and insightful angle. Thank you. Makes me think that His Love and Glory also knows no bounds. Looking forward to that time when I'll grasp more of it than I do now.
