2 Corinthians 10:18 (NKJV) For not he who commends himself is approved, but whom the Lord commends.
It’s always nice to be commended. It’s important to us as people. Everybody understands the value of commending and being commended.
When I was in the army I received commendation medals. Those are the medals soldiers wear with pride over their heart on their dress uniforms. When you see a soldier with a lot of different colors, representing commendations, it is quite impressive.
It would be much less impressive if you knew all of those medals were self-awarded. If soldiers could issue their own commendations your feeling would change. Instead of feeling pride you would feel pity.
Self-commendation is a desperate attempt for attention. It doesn’t have its desired affect.
However, the commendation of your commanding officer is an entirely different thing. Medals of commendation are given out to soldiers who aren’t seeking commendation but those whose decisions, actions, sacrifices, faithfulness and loyalty warrant it.
One day I want to hear those words, “Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the glory of the Lord.” That is the commendation I seek.
RESPOND // ORATIO
Pray in response to what the Lord has spoken to you.
Jesus, I need Your help in seeking only Your commendation. Nothing else really matters. Amen.
