Sin’s Ground Zero

Daily Reading // Psalm 19:1-14

READY // SILENCIO

Take a moment to quiet your mind and prepare your heart for your time with the Lord.

READ // LECTIO

Read the passage above up to three times aloud. Allow yourself to feel the words as they are read.

REFLECT // MEDITATIO

Now direct your focus on the words, phrases concepts or sentences that got your attention. What is God speaking to you today through His word?

Psalm 19:13 Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins; Let them not have dominion over me. Then I shall be blameless, And I shall be innocent of great transgression.

The word here in the Hebrew for presumptuous sins is translated as pride in each of its other uses. David is saying, as far as sins go, it’s generally pride that is directing things. The sins that are rooted in pride (and that’s a good number of them) are the ones that I have real trouble with. When pride is involved, sin is particularly destructive and domineering. It is the root of great transgression.

What would it be like to have no pride, no arrogance, no self obsession? What if everything I did were motivated by the best of others instead of self interest? Where would sin be? It would have nothing to hang on to. David was right. Sin’s control over me is pride and self interest.

Jesus has no pride or self interest.

Philippians 2:3-5 (NKJV) 3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. 5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.

Strangle pride and sin can’t breath.

RESPOND // ORATIO

Pray in response to what the Lord has spoken to you.

Jesus, Get to the root of sin in me. Keep me from arrogance, high self opinion and self interest. Amen.
