S // SCRIPTURE

Select a verse from today’s reading

Psalms 42:11 (NKJV) Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; For I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God.

O // OBSERVATION

Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text

This is a psalm of David. David had more soul-awareness than most people. He realized the significance of a person’s soul and the importance of a healthy soul. He kept tabs on the status of his soul.

David knew what it was like to have a disquieted soul, one that is cast down. He also knew the remedy - Hope in God!

A // APPLICATION

How can I apply this to my life today?

I could use more soul awareness like David. Even though I could not articulate it like the psalmist, I have also had times when my soul was down. Everyone has.

Some of those times it is easy to identify the cause of your disquieted soul. Maybe it is due to a great disappointment, or a jarring life event, or anxiety and fear about something that is going to happen.

Other times you just don’t know why. You are downcast, you feel soul-sick, and you don’t even know why. Like David we wonder, “Why so downcast, O my soul?”

Whether I know the cause or not, the answer is the same - Hope in God. The greatest cause of soul-sickness is the lack of hope. Reestablish hope through praise to lift your soul and help your countenance.

So, how is my soul today?

P // PRAYER

Express yourself in prayer

Jesus, You came to set my soul free. My soul belongs to You. My hope is firmly placed in You. Fill my soul with Your Holy Spirit today. Amen.
