S // SCRIPTURE

Select a verse from today’s reading

Galatians 1:6-7 (NKJV) 6 I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ.

O // OBSERVATION

Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text

Some of those in Galatia, who had accepted the gospel through Paul’s ministry, were now being fooled by other teachings. They were not discarding and changing everything but they were substantively changing their theology based on others’ teachings.

These weren’t minor doctrines, like the disputable doctrines Paul talks about in Romans 14. These were changes that altered the basis of their faith.

A // APPLICATION

How can I apply this to my life today?

The Galatians are an example to me to carefully judge every teaching before accepting it. Consider teaching not as an individual item - it’s persuasiveness and cleverness and appeal - but against the whole of scripture. Does it fit?

There is a responsibility of teachers not to pervert or twist the gospel of Christ. There is a responsibility of hearers not to accept contradictory teachings.

They were willing to give up grace! What am I willing to give up?

P // PRAYER

Express yourself in prayer

Jesus, teach and lead me by Your Holy Spirit. Amen.
