Then one from the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” But He said to him, “Man, who made Me a judge or an arbitrator over you?” And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”
Luke 12:13-15 NKJV
This issue of inheritance had obviously been a point of contention among these brothers. Their relationship was being sacrificed over the issue of an inheritance. But relationship is much more valuable than stuff.
Covetousness causes us to put too high a value on things and too little value on people, relationships, peace, eternity. With probably only one opportunity to talk with Jesus, this man uses it to get ‘his fair share’. When asked to settle the issue, Jesus pretty much says, ‘That shouldn’t even be an issue’.
Don’t over value things and undervalue people.
