S // SCRIPTURE

Select a verse from today’s reading

Matthew 20:4 (NKJV) “and said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.’ So they went.

O // OBSERVATION

Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text

I’ve read this parable of Jesus many times. I usually focus on the payoff at the end of the day, not the agreement made at the beginning.

There were four groups in all. The first group of workers knew what they were in for and what they would get out of it, one denarius.

All of the other workers worked, not for an agreed upon payoff but for a promise, “Whatever is right I will give you.” That takes a lot of trust.

The trust paid off! The groups who worked for a promise got more than they deserved. The group who worked under contract got just what they deserved, but they didn’t think even that was enough.

Without faith we tend to fall into comparison and dissatisfaction.

A // APPLICATION

How can I apply this to my life today?

I am challenged this morning by the three groups who agreed to work without an agreed upon payment. They showed great trust! And their trust was greatly rewarded.

Am I willing to live for the Lord, serve the Lord, without demanding, “What’s in it for me?” These workers trusted the field owner to be fair. To them He was more than fair.

I know and am persuaded that no one who serves the Lord and trusts in Him will be short changed.

No one.

P // PRAYER

Express yourself in prayer

Jesus, You are so good to me. And the best is yet to come! Amen.
