S // SCRIPTURE
Select a verse from today’s reading
Obadiah 1:3 (NKJV) The pride of your heart has deceived you, You who dwell in the clefts of the rock, Whose habitation is high; You who say in your heart, ‘Who will bring me down to the ground?’
O // OBSERVATION
Why did this verse get your attention? Make a simple observation from the text
This pronouncement from the Lord is against Edom, the descendants of Esau. They didn’t treat their ‘brother’ as they should have. Edom pushed Israel around and thought they would get away with it. God said, ‘You won’t’.
One of the greatest wrongs committed by Edom against Israel was when the Romans made an Edomite king of Israel. His name was Herod.
A // APPLICATION
How can I apply this to my life today?
Pride is a deceiver. It distorts judgement and distorts reality. It lifts you up where you think you have superiority. In reality you have more vulnerability. ‘Pride comes before a fall’ (Proverbs 16:18).
We also say ‘what goes up must come down’. The higher I get lifted up by pride the greater the fall.
It’s better for me to keep my feet on the ground rather than be lifted up by pride.
P // PRAYER
Express yourself in prayer
Jesus, You suffered humility and indignity for me. I will not be swept up by pride. Amen.
