The King’s Table

So David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake, and will restore to you all the land of Saul your grandfather; and you shall eat bread at my table continually.”

‭‭II Samuel‬ ‭9‬:‭7‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

There are two stories, one right after the other, that provide an interesting contrast.

In the first story, David wants to show kindness to Saul’s family by blessing his descendants. In the second story, David wants to show kindness to an old friend by blessing his descendants.

In the first case, Mephibosheth’s humility and trust gained him property and position with the king.

In the second case, the people of Ammon reacted with suspicion, fear and mistrust. What could’ve worked out for their good worked out by great loss.

Some people’s first reaction is suspicion. They can’t receive the kindness of others, or the kindness of God, without suspicion. That is no way to live.

Believe the best in people, not the worst.

Father, Like Mephibosheth, You have poured kindness and grace upon me. I live for Uou today. Amen.
