The Language of the Enemy

Daily Reading // Psalm 31:1-24

READY // SILENCIO

Take a moment to quiet your mind and prepare your heart for your time with the Lord.

READ // LECTIO

Read the passage above up to three times aloud. Allow yourself to feel the words as they are read.

REFLECT // MEDITATIO

Now direct your focus on the words, phrases concepts or sentences that got your attention. What is God speaking to you today through His word?

Psalms 31:18 (NKJV) Let the lying lips be put to silence, Which speak insolent things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have lying lips silenced? Wouldn’t it be great if we didn’t have to hear things that are insolent, proud or filled with contempt? What a different world that would be.

It’s not the world that the psalmist lived in. The time he’s describing sounds a lot like our own.

It’s not the world that Jesus lived in. Much of this psalm is prophetic and messianic. Jesus endured lies and wicked speech much more than I do.

It’s not a world that anyone has lived in. Jesus said Satan is a liar and the father of lies. He said when Satan lies he is speaking his native tongue. This is the language of the enemy.

But there is a different world coming. Imagine a place where there are no lies. There is no pride, or insolence, or contempt. Everything spoken is true and edifying. That place is heaven, our eternal home.

What do we do in the meantime?

Don’t let the language of the enemy get you down. Keep your head up. Many before you have endured and overcome. Hold on. A new world is coming.

Don’t take part in it. Deceit, pride, insolence and contempt are not part of our language. Once we start speaking like this we become fluent in the language of the enemy. That is one language I don’t want to speak.

RESPOND // ORATIO

Pray in response to what the Lord has spoken to you.

Jesus, Test my tongue. Have I started to sound like the world around me? Show me where my speech does not come from You but from the world. Amen.
