Daily Reading // Isaiah 34:1-17
READY // SILENCIO
Take a moment to quiet your mind and prepare your heart for your time with the Lord.
READ // LECTIO
Read the passage above up to three times aloud. Allow yourself to feel the words as they are read.
REFLECT // MEDITATIO
Now direct your focus on the words, phrases concepts or sentences that got your attention. What is God speaking to you today through His word?
Isaiah 34:11 But the pelican and the porcupine shall possess it, Also the owl and the raven shall dwell in it. And He shall stretch out over it The line of confusion and the stones of emptiness.
Buildings, and even cities, were laid out with a measuring line. It was an old form of surveying that marked out specific distances for ownership, identification and construction. A measuring line was similar to our tape measure. Have you ever been part of a building project? How much is a tape measure used? Without accurate measurements it is impossible to build a quality building.
What if your tape measure had inaccurate distances on it? What would that do to your end result? What if everyone’s measuring line had its own random markings and none of them were the same? That would be a line of confusion. Far from being helpful, a line of confusion just brings further chaos to whatever is being built.
Thats pretty much what we see in our world today. Everyone is using a different measuring standard and there is very little agreement in the measuring. No wonder there is confusion and frustration. Before arguing about outcomes we need to agree on a shared standard. Without a uniform measuring line we are going to be unable to build anything together.
What is a shared standard for measuring life? The Bible is the only one I know. Without the Bible the best we can expect is a line of confusion.
RESPOND // ORATIO
Pray in response to what the Lord has spoken to you.
Father, I know my own ideas for measuring life are flawed. I see it every day. My own perceptions are so limited. Only Your Word gives me a true standard. Help me to build with compassion and quality, not confusion. Amen.
